On April 21, 2012 Sofia hosted the competition on nuclear power topics between school students organized by BULATOM, WorleyParsons and the Association of Women in Nuclear WIN-Bulgaria. Six teams from different cities competed in three rounds, where the highest number of points was collected by the students of the National Science and Mathematics School "Academic Chakalov ", in Sofia.  The other teams have been awarded with certificates for their achievements in demonstrating detailed knowledge, understandable presentation of complex matters, attractive presentation, teamwork and enthusiasm during the competition.

"Event on nuclear energy in such a format was held for the first time in Bulgaria and we are extremely impressed by the active involvement, enthusiasm and knowledge of the students. All six teams performed successfully and we appreciate their interest and attitude towards nuclear energy, whose benefits for society, economy and environment are indisputable, continuously improving and developing. We will be glad if one day these students become part of the family of nuclear engineers in Bulgaria and we hope so because today some of them demonstrated knowledge of academic level ", said Stanislav Georgiev from BULATOM. He was a chairman of the three-member jury, presented also by Prof. Georgi Vassilev of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and Ivaylo Stanev from "Onet Technologies"

The seminar was held with the support of the Union of physicists in Bulgaria. In his opening speech the chairman of the Sofia branch of the Union, prof. T. Mishonov, emphasized on the symbolic location of the meeting - the auditorium named after the first woman employed as a professor at Sofia University and founder of the nuclear physics department there.

The workshop was moderated by Albena Georgieva who underlined the successful involvement of women in nuclear technologies related activities and made a special focus on the needs to develop new specialists for these specific positions.

WIN Bulgaria members made presentations on:

  • Current status of global nuclear power (Boyka Papazova)
  • Nuclear technologies (Albena Stoyanova)
  • Licensing aspects of new nuclear construction (Vera Sabinova)
  • Radiation monitoring (Radka Ivanova - guest speaker from the Kozloduy section of WiN Bulgaria)

Additional questions were discussed about the possibilities for career development at Kozloduy NPP, as well as the potential for holding similar meetings and seminars in the future.

Activities of WiN Slovenia

Win Slovenia which is called Alfa Section was in 2011 quite active. In order to promote nuclear technologies among general and some specific publics several round tables were organised.

In May 2011 the discussion on the draft EU Directive on Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management was organized with members of Slovene Nuclear Society and EU parliament member Mrs. Romana Jordan. More than 50 people were obtaining the information about the directive and were also proposing some recommendation to Mrs. Jordan for amendments.

For general public presentation and discussion on Fukushima accident was organized in community where ARAO is operating storage facility. Two topics were covered by experts: the technical part and development of accident and radiological consequences for environment and public. People were extremely interested especially in environmental influence of accident to public and received a lot explanation and answers.

Many presentations were delivered at schools, for different associations and residents groups in order to explain different topics of nuclear technology and radioactive waste management.

To obtain correct information on the on the position of women in nuclear an analysis was prepared within institutions in Slovenia which are functioning in the field including nuclear industry, regulators, research institute and public services. The results show that the situation is worse than years ago. Taking into account eight organisations in nuclear filed in Slovenia, percentage of women employed is 40% or less, with one exception: Agency for radioactive waste management (RWM) with 55% of women. No institution is managed by a female director, only few women are on leading positions.

But there are also some good news for women in nuclear: we succeeded to have our members in management and supervision board of Slovene Nuclear Society, our members became part of Program committee for our international conference and also because of that we succeed to have 4 chairpersons of different sections and to have 5 oral presentations at Ljubljana 2012, which will be held in September 2012.A poster about Win EU will enable to us to spread the information on our activities.
